Our independent living centre is a purpose built facility designed to support the teaching of food technology within the design and technologies curriculum. The space is fully accessible, with hydraulic height adjustable tables and benches, a sensor operated wash basin, and a fully accessible pantry and drawers that place ingredients and equipment within easy reach for all students.
Cooking facilities include hotplates, an oven and a talking microwave with tactile controls. A wide range of adapted cooking equipment is also available, such as switch adapted blenders and appliances, easy grip utensils, and non-slip mats.
These purposeful design elements enable students to fully participate in all aspects of food preparation and the broader design process. The environment fosters critical thinking and problem solving, allowing students to plan, test, and adapt recipes while developing key skills in creativity and evaluation.
